What You Can Expect At Encounter Marketplace

We Meet Early Morning On The Last Friday Of Every Month

Hello everyone, I’m Brian Rea, I’m from Encounter Church Ballito in the heart of Ballito

As a person who once worked in a corporate setting and then, in the last decade or so, as a freelance consultant.

I’ve been privileged to work in a diverse array of markets, industries and enterprises

I’ve seen inspiring leadership and, to put it bluntly, the exact opposite

I’ve seen teams and companies brought low through corruption and fraud

And I’ve seen companies and enterprises that have a genuine heart for society and which innovate accordingly.

But most of all, mainly because I’ve been one myself, I’ve seen Christians struggling in the workplace. stop

The Marketplace believer is caught in the crossfire of many competing forces

Sometimes, it’s as simple as keeping our own businesses afloat – making payday and coming out in the black

For some, it’s a question of how far up the corporate ladder they should climb – and how to climb in a manner that honors God

But most often, it’s simply a struggle to figure out how to live out their faith at work.

Historically, the church has had a tendency to put certain jobs on a pedestal and say “that’s the way to advance the Kingdom”. Don’t get me wrong, church leadership and church planting are critical Kingdom occupations but in putting them on a pedestal, we are at risk of de-spiritualising (or secularizing) everyday work.

“A gospel that fails to deal with the issues of the day is no gospel at all” – said Martin Luther

and how we live out …and indeed share that gospel through our work in a fallen world is very much…an issue of the day

The bible teaches that ALL work – when done in the Lord – advances his purposes. Work is the medium through which a Christian can

A. Offer himself to God

B. Serve his neighbor

C. Contends for and promotes the Honor and Glory of God in the world

Encounter Marketplace is here to support Christians in the workplace – you may be involved in for-profit work or not for profit work.

You may be a business owner or a business leader or you may be a humble employee who possesses no or little earthly influence or authority at work.

This ministry is for everyone.

Encounter Marketplace, is about seeking God’s manifold wisdom for our work and about contending for kingdom outcomes in the marketplace.

Last year, the focus of Encounter marketplace was to build strong foundations.

We looked at a variety of topics including what the Bible has to say about Work, rest, calling, wisdom, folly, failure and much more…we also had our first Small Business Saturday – the first of many I trust going into 2020.

This year, the focus will be on our City and our region. In his letter to the Babylonian Exiles, Jeremiah encouraged the people to “Seek the prosperity of the city to which they had been exiled – if the city prospers, he wrote, you will prosper”. Jeremiah 29:7

In 2020, while this will undoubtedly take the form of specific initiatives, it will also mean serving God in our everyday work…as Charles Finney once wrote

“Let the ungodly see professing Christians in every bargain consulting the good of the person they are trading with, seeking not their own wealth, but every man another’s wealth; living above the world and setting no value on the world any further than it would be the means of glorifying God”
