OUR PAST & FUTURE

TO KNOW JESUS CHRIST AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN

ENCOUNTER HIS GREATNESS

“Our goal is to be a Church that not only talks about God but we want people to personally encounter his greatness and transform change using their giftings."

Bayside Church – In 1982 Wessel and Carol Wessels planted the Church in Stanger and soon after that started hosting evening meetings in Ballito in an a upper room in the municipal offices adjacent to the BP Garage.

As things matured all meetings were combined and moved to the Umhlali Primary School hall and later on moved again to the Balvista Centre.

On the 31st of July 1994 the Wessels handed the Church over to Mark and Colette Meeske from Glenridge Church in Durban who over the years that followed saw the Church grow and purchased land at Seaward Estates at the turn of the millennium. Phase one of the Church “Which is now the Rev Hall” was completed in July 2001 and phase two which is the main auditorium was completed July 2005.

Destiny Life Church – On 18 October 2009 the Meeskes handed over the Church to Peter and Ilana Markgraaf. Soon after the transition he renamed the Church to Destiny Life Church (DLC), and began casting his vision in line with that name.

Part of this vision was also to serve the growing town of Ballito in the areas of family, arts, business and education. In 2010 the idea to start a high school on the Church premises was birthed, and in January 2011 Destiny Life Academy opened its doors to Grade 8 learners. Soon after that the school began accepting Grade 9 and 10 learners, and a pre-school was started too.

Between 2013 and 2015 the Church briefly moved landside of the N2 “where Rivers Church Ballito is now” in an effort to serve this vision. In August 2015 the Church moved back to Seaward Estates as this was always part of God’s original plan.

Encounter Church Ballito – In November 2015 Guy and Cheryl Veltman as well as their three children, Christie, Ryan and Grace moved up from the south coast to take the reins over from the Markgraafs.

The Veltmans had been leading a Church for ten years in Scottburgh and it was an instant “Yes” on their first drive into the Seaward Estate as this visionary couple where overwhelmed with the possibilities.

After about two years in, they changed the name to Encounter Church. They believe that everyone desires to encounter this living God, some just don’t know it yet. They give plenty opportunity for people to encounter His love and His power when they visit the Church.

The vision is to be Jesus followers who contend for the realities of heaven here on earth. We believe this with everything inside of us. We don’t just want to be a people who know about this great God, but who learn how to encounter Him. We live to see revival, ie Churches ablaze with the power of God and we believe that any Church can have revival. The key seems to be to hunger after His presence, never giving up, as psalm 105:4 says “ Seek the Lord and Bis strength. Seek His presence continually.

On the 10th of January 2021 Encounter Church Ballito was transitioned into the hands of Hilton & Tanya McKinley, a seasoned couple who lead Richlands Church in Richmond for over twenty years.
